Seven-up Sean

BLANDFORD 86 (1pt) lost to ST GEORGE’S 88-3 (19pts) by seven wickets

SEAN Walbridge’s devastating seven-wicket haul helped St George’s record their first home win of the Dorset Sunday League Division One season and only their second overall.

The visitors batted first at the Rec but their openers were kept in check by Rich Cole and Dave Griffiths who both bowled well with the new ball to pick up a wicket apiece.

Despite this, the innings was progressing steadily on 48-2 before the introduction of Walbridge’s left-arm spin turned the match significantly in the Saints’ favour.

The Blandford middle order was ripped apart as they lost four wickets, all to Walbridge, for the addition of only seven runs.

Olly Trowbridge showed some defiance to strike two fours and two sixes in his innings of 24 before he became yet another of Walbridge’s victims.

And the former Dorset Minor Counties star finished with superb figures of 7-19 from 10.1 overs.

Walbridge received excellent support from Brian Keegan who added four catches and a stumping to his ever-increasing number of scalps.

The home side’s reply got off to its now customary slow start and they lost Matt King, who had been promoted to open the innings, without a single run on the board. Second-wicket pair Colin Edney and Cole batted solidly to take the Saints well on their way to victory, although both were then dismissed in quick succession.

The North Dorset side used nine different bowlers in an attempt to eke out more wickets but this eventually led to a number of wides increasing the total.

Griffiths then struck two boundaries in one over to bring up the winning runs as the county town side leapfrogged their opponents in the Division One table.
