Unbeaten Dorchester on cloud nine

PARLEY III 141 (7pts) lost to DORCHESTER III 178-8 (20pts) by 37 runs

DORCHESTER completed their ninth win and first double of the season with a 37-run victory over an experienced Parley team lying in third place before the start of the match.

Dorchester, who fielded eight players under the age of 18, lost the toss and were asked to bat.

Third-team debutant Colin Edney, in for holidaying vice-captain Jae Miller, opened the batting with 14-year-old Nick Beer and put on 51 before the latter was bowled by Hamp for 13.

Tom Cottrell, back after suffering a broken nose, and Edney, batted sensibly on an awkward slow and low wicket.

Cottrell was the aggressor in the 74-run partnership, hitting four consecutive fours in the early part of his innings.

Cottrell was finally out for 39, mistiming a low full toss to mid-on off House (2-26) with the score on 125-2.

The senior anchorman of the innings, Edney, followed 10 balls later for 42 being bowled by House, trying to up the run rate as the innings entered the last 10 overs.

Wickets fell at regular intervals to stem the run fest but Jamie Quinton again batted well for 12 with Cameran Lucas, Dan Floyd and Martin Jones all running quickly as the innings finished on 178-8 with maximum batting points attained. At tea, the opposition bowlers were keen to tell the Dorchester youngsters that most teams had scored more than 200 runs batting first, in an attempt to put some doubt in their minds before taking to the field.

This probably backfired as the young medium pace attack of Lloyd Mitchem and Nick Beer restricted the Parley score to only 27-2 off the first 10 overs, with both openers dispatched back in the pavilion following an impressive open spell from Mitchem.

The introduction of Floyd, in tandem with Mitchem, saw his very first ball bowl Bealy for four, Mitchem then removed J Rake for one before Floyd took the wicket of Roe for a duck.

This saw Parley collapse to 40-6 after only 15 overs and the game looked set for an early finish, however, first-teamer Paul Sandell (64), who had stood at the other end seeing wickets fall around him, had other ideas.

Batting with ex-first-teamer Chris Pardy (18) they added 46 quick runs as they set about the young Dorchester change bowlers.

It was the partnership of 47 between Sandell and Mark Rake which nearly took Parley to the winning post and they looked likely victors at 126-7 with 11 overs remaining.

Captain Pete Tucker, turned to the top bowlers of the afternoon, Mitchem and Floyd, to bowl the important dying overs and they responded brilliantly, turning the game on its head.

Mitchem dismissed the dangerous Sandell for 64 with a superb inswinging yorker and Floyd then bowled the defiant Rake for 19.

It was left to the returning Beer to clean up Hardiman and leave Parley 37 runs short.
