Fox shows mettle in Loop triumph

STUART Fox took the men’s title as 130 runners braved the dismal weather to complete this year’s Maiden Castle Loop.

The competitors had to show their mettle in running the ancient ramparts of the oldest Iron Age hill fort in Europe and Fox of Bournemouth AC acquitted himself brilliantly to come home in 39mins 55secs.

Blackburn Harrier Lee Passco (40.14) finished second while veteran Paul Rose of Yeovil Town RRC (40.57) claimed third. In the ladies’ race, Caroline Stanzel (48.22) of Poole Runners took the win ahead of runner-up Lin Lascelles (50.47) of Yeovil Town RRC and Hannah Towner (52.15) of Poole Runners.

The youngest competitor to complete the race was 16-year-old Alex Vrublevkis (62.39) while the oldest was 72-year-old Des Downey (62.29) of Royal Manor Portland.

The men’s team award went to Yeovil Town RRC with Rose being backed up by Martin Lascelles, Mike Harvey and Neil McNish.

Poole Runners took the ladies crown with Stanzel leading Hannah Towner, Heather Nethercott and Kay Nippard home in impressive style.

Race director Gail Coverley said: “The rain and mist were relentless but that did not deter the runners, who put on a grand show.

“It was also great to see that most of the competitors still had the energy to stay for the prize presentation and enjoy tea and homemade cakes. “Myself and John Robinson would like to thank sponsors Sportsgear of Dorchester and Weymouth, Greenslade Taylor Hunt and Dorset Cereals for their generous contributions and all the wonderful volunteers and marshals who braved the poor conditions to ensure the runners came home safely.

“We would also like to thank all those behind the scenes because without their help the race could not take place. Part of the monies raised will go to the RNLI.”
