FRESHWATER Beach Holiday Park hosted a night of high-octane action as Bridport Amateur Boxing Club’s annual extravaganza thrilled spectators.

The build-up to the showpiece had been dogged by problems but everything came together on the evening to provide onlookers with a quality bill, featuring 15 bouts.

Four Bridport boxers – Zak Wakar, John Plyer, Curly Martin and Jamie Parker – took to the canvas and each turned in a determined performance.

Also gracing the bill were Berkshire-based Pinewood Star, Mayflower and Apollo Club, as well as teams from both Dorset and Coventry.

Although a side representing Portsmouth University withdrew at short notice, Bridport coach Alan Slaney was absolutely delighted at how the event unfolded.

He said: “We had a lot of problems with Joe Egan and the Portsmouth team both pulling out but we got away with it and it was a superb night.

“On Tuesday I was sweating because I was down to five fights but the help I received was fantastic and everybody really put themselves out.

“I was also worried there would be nobody there because the weather was so bad, but we had fantastic support and the spectators created a great atmosphere.

“All the Bridport fighters performed incredibly well. Zak had his first win and John went three rounds with a hard-hitting Apollo opponent.

“Curly did us proud and Jamie took some heavy shots but battled all the way. He won the Paul Cosby Award for Best Bridport Boxer of the Night.”

Slaney went on to add: “Ashley Rusell, our new trainer, did a fantastic job, as did Gus. It was a shame that Portsmouth couldn’t make it but it was out of their hands.

“I’d like to thank Mike and all the staff at Freshwater and I’m looking forward to our next event there on March 13. Hopefully the build-up to that one won’t be quite so hectic!”
