Positives taken by Vickers

DESPITE suffering defeat in his first game in charge, caretaker-boss Ashley Vickers was encouraged by the Magpies’ display and believes there is a “platform on which to build”.

The visiting Magpies, playing their first match since the sacking of Roy O’Brien, took the lead at Woking through Mark Jermyn’s sixth goal of the season but were pegged back by Moses Ademola moments before the break.

And the Cards came up trumps in the second half as Harry Arter and Nathaniel Pinney struck in the final 15 minutes to condemn Dorchester to their 11th defeat of the Blue Square South campaign – leaving them two points clear of the bottom three.

Reflecting on the loss, Vickers said: “It was a disappointing result but I felt we deserved something from the game. We asked for a reaction from the Weymouth game the previous week and we certainly got that.

“We played a different formation and we frustrated Woking for long periods, as well as going 1-0 up.

“They got an equaliser but we still came out for the second half with the right attitude. However, naivety saw us give away the second goal and Woking caught us on the break for their third.

“The lads were great all of last week and they applied themselves well at Woking. They put balls in the right areas and we even had chances to go 2-0 up, so on another day it could’ve been a different story.

"There were plenty of positives though and it’s a platform on which to build.

“If the lads keep putting in the same attitude and effort then they may lose the odd battle but they’ll win the war.

“Woking is a tough place to come and it will be difficult for most teams to get something.

“The result wasn’t what we wanted but with the qualities we showed we’ll get out of the situation we’re in.”

Ryan Hill made his first appearance since rejoining the club but another new face, ex-Terra Kyle Critchell, was unable to take part.

Vickers added: “Ryan did well and showed a great level of maturity. We need to get him a bit fitter but he’ll be a great asset for us.

“There’s still a little bit of paperwork to sort out in regards to Kyle but we’re hoping to get all that done and dusted for Saturday’s game against Hampton & Richmond.”

Asked whether there was any possibility of capturing another former Weymouth man in James Coutts, Vickers replied: “James needs to get his fitness back and he needs to make a few decisions, so we’ll see what develops this week.”

* The Magpies have made a seven-day approach to Wessex League side Wimborne Town for centre-half Nathan Walker.

And Dorchester host Wimborne tomorrow night in the quarter finals of the Dorset Senior Cup.

* Dorchester have announced plans to field a reserve team next season with Phil Simkin a candidate to become reserve-team manager.
