Tommy guns for Blues

NEW recruit Tommy Hastie is poised to make his debut for Portland United in tomorrow’s Dorset Premier League clash with Cobham Sports (2pm).

The former Weymouth Sports and Chickerell United attacking midfielder put pen to paper for the Blues last week as boss Stuart Heath attempts to bolster his resources.

Such is the impression Hastie has made that Heath revealed his latest signing would be shoehorned into the line-up for this Grove Corner encounter.

Speaking to the Echo, he said: “Tommy gives us something we’ve missed recently and he will come straight into the side. He’s a good player who is full of energy.

“All in all we’ve have been defending well but lacked creativity going forward. Tommy will help us in that department and give us another option.”

Of tomorrow’s opponents, Heath said: “Cobham are a mid-table side, much like ourselves at the moment, and are capable of improving and becoming a decent outfit.

“We’ve had a tough run and been missing a bit of forward-thinking in our play. The only way we can get confidence back is by working hard and collecting points.

“Our aims are twofold. We want to get a settled squad together, which we are working towards, and to improve the young crop of players we have here.

“The youngsters have all the potential in the world and I’m very excited about what the future holds, but it’s up to us to nurture that talent and make sure it doesn’t go unfulfilled.”

Portland remain shorn of a handful of their prized assets with Liam Miles and Nick Carroll both suspended, while Matt White and skipper Andy Perkins are sidelined by injury.

Heath added: “Matt and Andy are two experienced players and we’ve missed that and their ability. It’s crucial we get them back as soon as possible.”

Cobham may be 12th in the table – three places below the islanders – but their form has picked up of late with a 3-1 triumph over Blandford United the highlight.

The Blues, meanwhile, have not sampled victory since beating Sherborne Town Reserves on October 17 as defeats to Westland Sports and Chickerell United followed.

Blues (from): Cox, Cranny, Gay, Maxted, Whyton, D Skelton, Morgan, Halloran, Godfrey, Hastie, Charles, Batchelor, Weeks, Churchill, M Conning, A Skelton.
