Scott's a great leader

FEW 22-year-olds would be considered the experienced head of a Blue Square South back-line, but that is exactly what Weymouth defender Scott Brice is having to cope with in his first season at the club.

The no-nonsense attitude that Brice has shown in his 16 appearances in claret and blue have helped him become established as the leader of the side.

And the ex-Bristol Rovers man has been rewarded for his consistent showings with the captain’s armband since Kyle Critchell’s suspension and subsequent departure.

“I thoroughly enjoy being captain,” said Brice. “I was at Bristol Rovers for 10 years and captain for most of their youth teams, all the way through to the reserves. I thrive on that responsibility.

“I’m just glad I’m playing well and hopefully I can keep the armband but, whoever Hutch puts in charge, I will still be the same.

“I like to be personal, player to player, and I have no problems going up to someone and telling them they are doing well or not doing well.

“It’s never an individual thing, all players know that, and as soon as we are off the pitch we’re all friends.”

The 22-year-old admitted to doing his best to blank out the recent off-the-field troubles, something helped by the squad’s unity.

“It’s a laugh a minute,” he said. “There’s a few lads in the team who all have a bit of banter between us.

“Even though I come from Bristol, I don’t mind travelling down because I thoroughly enjoy it.”

With regards to the recent takeover, Brice added: “Someone has taken over and we are just fortunate there is a club there because it was looking bleak.

“There is someone in now to sort out the stuff off the pitch and it’s up to the squad to keep it up on the field.”

Top scorer Jake Reid is suffering from tonsillitis, but has declared himself fit enough to lead the Terras’ line at Braintree Town today (3pm).

“If we had a bigger squad it might have been an opportunity to give him a rest,” said manager Ian Hutchinson. “With the situation at the moment we can’t, but he will only be playing if he is 100 per cent fit.”

n New Weymouth FC owner, George Rolls, is inviting all supporters and businesses who donated to the Terras Saviour 100 campaign to the Wessex Stadium on Friday evening at 7.30pm.

The meeting will be followed by general questions and answers, which any other supporters are welcome to attend.

Attendance should be confirmed by email to george@ traderecruit mentltd.co.uk Rolls said: “Obviously the Terras Saviour 100 haven’t had what was committed so I need to put their minds at rest that they will be sold what was on the tin and thank them all personally.

“Hopefully they will come and see us and move on with confidence that they will get what they paid for.”

The Dorset Senior Cup quarter-final tie between Weymouth and Gillingham, re-arranged for Tuesday, will definitely take place at Gillingham (7.45pm).

Meanwhile, ex-Terra James Coutts has signed for Blue Square South leaders Newport County.
