Barbarians prove hard to shake off for Dorchester

Dorchester 36 IVEL BARBARIANS 21 DORCHESTER moved up to third spot in Southern Coun-ties South as they disposed of near rivals Ivel Barbarians.

The county town side though, made hard work of the win and gifted their opponents several opportunities before finishing 15 points in front.

Ivel put themselves under pressure from the start, handing a scrum to Dorchester on the halfway line. Quick ball to Matt Read saw him jink through the visiting defence only to be held just short of the line.

However, Tom Gower, one of three Gower brothers in the Dorchester line-up, picked up the pieces and scored an unconverted try in the corner.

Within minutes Ivel stole the lead after a misplaced pass was intercepted, touching down under the posts for a converted score and a 7-5 advantage.

The visitors were handed the chance to extend their lead to five points but the penalty, from in front of the posts, was put wide.

Dorchester were then reduced to 14 men and Ivel maintained their slender cushion going into the half-time break.

That two-point lead was wiped out in the second half as Dorchester started well and saw Lee Harvey score in the corner.

But again Ivel forced their way back – a well-worked move leading to a converted try.

Dorchester responded by adding two quick-fire tries, Adam Jones converting his own try before adding the extras after Read crossed the whitewash.

The home side were now in the ascendancy and although a couple of chances went begging, the pressure eventually told with Dorchester clinching victory courtesy of Adam Jones on the overlap and then Dave Gower forcing his way over the line.

To their credit, Ivel refused to give up and added a consolation score towards the end of the game.
