SAGGIES came through a high-scoring Echo Cup first round tie with The Lugger thanks to Ben Doidge (87no) and Simon Browne’s (63no) second-wicket partnership, which helped set an imposing total of 165-1.

The Lugger’s reply got off to a good start through Jon Dixon (27) and Dave Blackman (27) before Browne’s three wickets halted their progress.

Sam Polley (35no) added runs at the end of the innings but Saggies held on for a 35-run win.

Southill Snooker Club overcame Wessex Gasworks at Budmouth by seven wickets.

Gareth Price’s unbeaten 45, supported by Derek Millen (27), saw the Gasworks reach 94-6.

Southill’s James Dunham gave away just nine runs in his four-over spell as well as dismissing both openers for a duck and Norman Robins replaced him to take 3-14.

Dunham also starred with the bat with 53 not out as Southill eased through with eight balls to spare.

Albany Cavaliers knocked out Division One opponents Portland Red Triangle by 29 runs at Redlands.

The Cavaliers looked to have been tied down by the islanders’ bowlers as they initially found scoring difficult, especially after the dismissal of Phil Eaton (26), but Dave Kiteley (32no) scored steadily to boost their total to 94.

In reply, Triangle were pinned down by the tight bowling of Dave Trotter and Matt King who proved to be the pick of the bowlers taking 4-6 from his four overs.

Simon Proffitt (25) and Christian Brown’s (16) partnership gave them some hope, but a steady loss of wickets saw Portland bowled out for 65.

Cosmos booked their place in the next round with a four-wicket win over the Portland Arms.

Batting first the Arms were soon in trouble as Cruickshank (4-20) and Brown (2-16) tore through the top order.

However, veteran Jody Locke (35) rallied to help post a competitive 100-8.

Cosmos lost both openers early on, but Montgomery (37) led a steady run chase, aided by Burdett (16) and Sims (20no) and they won with three balls to spare.

In league action, Budmouth recorded a six-wicket win over Portland Red Triangle to move into a two-way tie in Division One.

Triangle got off to a solid start with Sawyer (35) and Crompton (30) adding 57 for the first wicket, but following their departures the run rate slowed, leading to a scramble in the closing stages, which resulted in three run outs in the final over as they finished on 114.

Triangle made early inroads reducing Budmouth to 2-1 thanks to Matt Randell (3-33).

Pete Moxom led the recovery with a fine knock of 74 not out, including 11 fours and four sixes and with good support from Gerety (20) and Morley (15), Budmouth reached their target in the 12th over.

New Look claimed their second win of the season with a five-wicket victory over The Lugger.

Geoff Lloyd (1-9) and Paul Chatterton (0-15) bowled typically frugal spells as the Lugger struggled for runs early in the innings, but Andy Jarvis (30) and Scott Males (17) recovered to 90-6 from 16 overs.

Faraz Ulhaq (45) and Andy Laidlow (17) set the pace for New Look, but the Lugger regained control through Males (1-19) and Dixon (18).

It was left to Rich Cole (20no) and Chatterton to guide them home with seven balls remaining.

Defending champions Moby Dick’s Bears joined Budmouth at the top of the table following a hard-fought win against Saggies.

Brendon King’s 53 formed the bedrock of Saggies’ innings as they set a commanding total of 129-5, with useful contributions from Womble (24) and Backhouse (20).

In reply, Paul Payne (57no) directed the run chase, supported by Guest (19), Batchelor (25) and Ryall (12no).

A thrilling game went right to the final over and the Bears just crept home with a ball to spare.

Albany Cavaliers maintained their perfect start to the season with a nine-wicket win over the George Inn.

The George set the early pace with opener Stuart Sugg (39) resisting opening bowlers Puckett (1-28) and Ellis (2-32).

The introduction of Dave Trotter (3-14) to the attack broke Sugg’s resistance and saw the run rate drop as the George ended on 100-8.

In reply, Dave Griffiths smashed a fine unbeaten 81, with his half-century coming off just 28 balls.

The George had no answer to his one-man assault and the Cavaliers tied up the points in the 10th over.

Southill Snooker Club moved into second place with a win against Wessex Gasworks.

Fowler (62) and Dunham (56) forged a fine opening stand as Southill took command early on, posting 140-3 from their 18 overs.

Wessex Gasworks proved almost their equals on a good batting track as Buckland (58no) and Crocker (50) shared their own century partnership, but tight bowling by openers Bailey (0-12) and Robins (0-18) left them with too much to do and they ended 16 runs short.

Cosmos moved into third position with victory over the Portland Arms at Redlands.

Keane and Harvey got Cosmos off to a flyer, with Keane smashing 41 quick runs, though tight bowling from Dave Price (2-19) pegged Cosmos back.

A total of 114 proved too much for the Royal Portland Arms to chase, with tight bowling from Brown, in particular, deserving more than the solitary wicket of Price (26), as he saw three catches all dropped by Keane.

Rob Thornton (18), John Cameron (34no) and Slade (16no) did well to give the Arms a chance, but Cosmos held on to win by 11 runs.
