STEPHEN Way held off last year’s winner Nathan Shrubb to secure victory in the 20th Blackmore Vale Lions Half Marathon.
The race, which took place in Bishops Caundle, attracted 672 entrants from all over the south of England with 517 finishing the main event and a further 21 completing the fun run.
After the snow and ice of the previous day, conditions turned out to be near perfect for the challenge, which saw Way cross the line first in a fine time of 1hr 10mins 33secs.
The Bournemouth AC member dominated the race in the latter stages with Shrubb (1.12.44) of Morpeth Harriers coming home in second, over two minutes adrift.
Jacek Cieluszeki (1.13.44), another Bournemouth AC competitor, finished third while Votwo’s Mal Varbel (1.26.17) took advantage of record-holder Emma D’Alton’s absence to take the ladies race ahead of Weston AC’s Liz Wiggins (1.26.59) and Bournemouth AC’s Stephanie Slade (1.27.09).
Unsurprisingly, Bournemouth AC won the men’s team race while Edgon Heath Harriers claimed the ladies’ equivalent thanks to Tracey Baker, Sharon Green and Charlotte Davies.
Wimborne AC’s Callum Kennedy won the fun run with Wells City Harriers’ Rebecca Carver first lady.
The event has raised in excess of £4,000 for the Youth Cancer Trust and other good causes, and organisers would like to thank all the marshals and volunteers that helped make it happen.
