SHEILA Baker and Kath Desmond produced a nail-biting finish in the final of the ladies’ singles at Moonfleet’s Winter Club competition.

Desmond was the first to take control, opening up a 15-7 lead after 15 ends. But Baker responded, winning the next six ends to move just one shot adrift.

After 25 tough ends the scores were level at 19 apiece and stood at 20 all two ends later with one left to play.

The championship finally went to Baker who took the one shot required in a match that was a credit to both players.

The ladies’ veteran singles final was between Desmond and Linda Bryson with the latter racing into a 15-6 lead after 12 ends. And she maintained control to win the game 21-10.

Bryson then teamed up with Irene Martindill to take on Joyce Jones and Rose Giles in the ladies’ pairs final with the Bryson/Martindill combination running out 22-6 victors.

Bryson, looking for a hat-trick of wins, then joined Chris Cook and faced Shirley and Keith Wyman in the mixed pairs final.

In a close start, Bryson/Cook led 10-7 after seven ends before picking up a seven and a three on the next two ends to eventually run out 30-14 winners.

In the men’s singles final, Barry Patterson met Mike Gale and in a tight contest the scores were level at 11 apiece after 13 ends.

The result was still in doubt after 16 ends with Patterson leading 20-18 but he then picked up the one shot required to take the championship by three.

In the veterans’ singles, Keith Wyman took on Dennis Branney with the latter holding a 13-11 lead after 16 closely-contested ends.

Wyman then took the next five ends to open up a 19-13 lead, which he maintained to the end, finally winning 21-16.

The under-25 singles final featured Martin Puckett and Chris Cook with the former controlling the match throughout to win 21-5.

The under-18s final was between Brandon King and Arthur Monelle and after nine tight ends the score were level at seven apiece.

King then edged ahead 20-15 and needed just one shot to win at 23 ends, but Monelle bounced back, picking up three shots to close the gap to just two.

However, it was King that eventually triumphed 21-18.

King then took on Ryan Nash in the under-14s singles final and the former held a 10-8 lead after 12 ends.

He then took the next three ends to go 16-8 in front, which proved vital as he went on to win the match 18-12.

The final of the men’s pairs featured Ron McCarthy and Puckett, who faced Mike Goddard and Patt-erson.

Another tight contest ensued with the Patterson pair leading 13-10 after 10 ends.

The Puckett duo then took the next seven ends to open up a 21-13 lead which proved decisive as they eventually ran out 22-16 winners.

Puckett featured again along with Alan Churches and Cook in the men’s triples final against Dave Slater, Dave Ralph and Dennis Branney.

The Puckett trio dominated the game throughout, winning the title 21-6.

The ladies’ drawn triples final was between Kate Puckett, Margaret Hooper and skip Rita Payne, who faced off against Sue Paull, Giles and skip Irene Abery.

The latter team took a 12-9 lead after 13 very competitive ends but the Payne trio then upped their game, winning four out of the last five ends to finally win the match 15-13.

In the ladies’ handicap pairs final, Joyce Jones and Anne White took on Jill Poulter and Trixie Dempsey with the former holding a slender 13-12 advantage after 17 ends.

The Dempsey duo then responded to open up a three-shot lead with two ends to play but the White pair picked up a three on the next to set up a grandstand finish.

The latter team then went on to grab another two shots off the final end to claim a hard-fought victory, 20-18.

The final of the men’s handicap pairs featured Alan McDine and Jim Hamilton who faced Larry Mather and Goddard with the Hamilton duo taking an 11-6 lead after eight ends.

The Goddard pair picked up a one and a six over the next two ends to move ahead but the Hamilton duo responded with a two and a four to eventually claim the spoils 17-14.

The two-wood drawn pairs final saw Andrew Moore and Keith Wyman who took on Mary Collins and Mike Goddard, with the latter taking a 16-11 lead after 17 ends.

The Wyman duo then upped their game only to be left one shot down with just one end to play.

In the end the Wyman team held their nerve to pick up two shots to edge home 18-17.

Goddard, appearing in his fourth final, teamed up with King to face Arthur and Dennis Monelle in the generation pairs final with the former dominating a one-sided affair to record a 20-2 verdict.

The junior drawn pairs final was between Joss Park and Arthur Monelle and Finlay Hansford and King.

After six tight ends the scores were level at five apiece.

The Monelle duo then took control, winning all the remaining ends to lift the title, 17-5.
