SHAFTESBURY 1 PORTLAND UTD 4

CHRIS Wilson feels there is more to come from his Blues, despite seeing them return to the Magna Dorset Premier League summit.

Saturday’s 4-1 victory at Shaftesbury Town was Port-land’s third in as many games and they now lead the way by virtue of a superior goal difference.

Scott Henley, Ashley Smith, Adam Linaker and Lewis Why-ton all found the net at Cock-rams and while pleased with the performance, the island chief believes there is still plenty in reserve.

He said: “The general feeling is we still have a few more gears to go up.

“But we are picking up results and it’s always a positive thing when you can win games and still feel there are things to improve on.

“The game was quite stretched from the first whistle and, given the fact it was a ridiculously hot day, we had to pick our moments.

“We took the lead on the half-hour with a header from Scott and five minutes later Andy Harris played a ball over the top and Ash ran through and chipped the keeper.

“At half-time we asked the lads to stay patient and look after the ball, as we didn’t want them running constantly on such a hot day, but we were slow out of the blocks and they came at us and scored 10 minutes in.

“We then got a clear penalty after a foul on Adam, which he converted himself, and with five minutes to go Lewis went through and also chipped the keeper to make it 4-1.

“It was disappointing not to keep a clean sheet but that’s just me picking at things.

“There is still room for improvement but three wins, 10 goals and just one conceded bodes well for the rest of the season.”

Next up for the early pacesetters is tonight’s trip to Bridport Reserves (7.30pm).

Wilson added: “It’s going to be a tough test. We played them in pre-season and they move the ball well, so we will have to be switched on.

“But the lads can take confidence from our three wins, which have all been away from home.”
