MICHAEL Watson took his season’s winnings in the West Region beyond £10,000 with his ninth triumph in another successful season at Weymouth, the course where he started his golf as a junior more than 25 years ago.

Watson made it back-to-back wins because the previous day he was involved in a three-way tie at Remedy Oak.

This time Watson, whose major victory this year was in the Micro-soft Masters order of merit tournament at Bowood, managed to beat his Wessex Golf Centre colleague Jon Bevan and former European Tour player Sion Bebb (Vale Hotel) by one stroke after a three-under-par return of 67.

Watson made just a modest start on a breezy but happily rain-free day.

He was actually one over par after dropping his only shot at the 375-yard eighth hole. However, a birdie at the ninth and three more at 12, 14 and 15 brought him the lead.

Bevan dropped three shots after six holes but rallied with five birdies in seven holes. Bebb, by contrast, was four under after eight holes before he lost three shots on the homeward run, adding just one birdie at the 17th.

Had Mark Wiggett (Dudsbury) par-red the last hole he would have joined them – but he made a triple bogey seven.
