WESSEX Golf Club’s Michael Watson led a field of 40 professionals from the West and South Wales to win one of the most prestigious Pro-Am events in the region.

Watson claimed the title at the pinnacle of Weymouth Golf Club’s charity week, when he beat fellow Wessex pro Jon Bevan into second place.

Bevan shared the runners-up spot with Vale Golf Resort pro Michael Bolt, from South Wales.

Brynhill’s Gareth Bennett, bag-ged an ace at the fifth during the tournament.

Pro-Am team results 1 Pro Russell Bennett with a team from Weymouth of S Elliott, C Davies and S Gray, 2 Pro Anthony Buchanan with a team from Weymouth of M Clay, D Stunt and N McDonald, 3 Pro Michael Bolt, with a team sponsored by Lanehouse Vauxhall, including l Bartlett, T Robson and L Shaw.

Alongside the Pro-Am, amateur competitions were played and included a men’s four-ball better-ball, which was won by Pat Crane’s Team Weymouth, who were sponsored by GMS Plumbing/Abbey Heating.

J Airth’s side from Knighton Heath took the mixed greensomes, while the ladies’ scramble was claimed by Y Brown’s team, also from Knighton Heath.

The seniors’ three-man team was won by D McCaughey’s side from Weymouth.

Finally, the scramble was bagged by M Johnson’s team, who were sponsored by the Marlboro Restaurant.

Held annually for more than 20 years, the charity week of golf at Weymouth raises funds for local charities and good causes.
