ALTHOUGH delighted with his side’s dream start to the season, Magpies’ manager Phil Simkin is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

Saturday’s impressive win at Sutton United has left Dorchester Town third in the table, one point adrift of early leaders Boreham Wood but with a game in hand.

And with 10 points from their opening five fixtures, the county town side have made their best ever start to a Conference South campaign.

Simkin though, whose side host East-leigh this evening (7.45pm), insists it is still “early days”.

He said: “I would have been delighted with a draw before the game on Saturday so to take three points is tremendous.

“I would never have thought we would be in this position after five games but it’s only five games and people have got to remember that. But I could not have asked for a better start.

“I’m really pleased for the lads. Stuart Heath (assistant) has come in and done a great job for us and there is nobody fitter than us in the league. I just hope we can carry it on.

“We are under no illusions about reaching the play-offs or winning things, I just want us to have a good season. If something comes of it then great.

“As the old adage goes, we will just take each game as it comes and we know what we have got coming our way tonight. It’s going to be a massive test.”

The big-spending Spitfires saw their three-match unbeaten run brought to an end by Dover Athletic at the weekend with the latter inflicting a 3-1 defeat at the Silverlake Stadium.

Simkin added: “They won’t be looking forward to playing us after Saturday.

“They may have too much for us, who knows, but they won’t be in for an easy ride.

“We are the poor relations who punch above their weight, but we will continue to do that and give a good account of ourselves. If we do that, who knows what the outcome will be.”

Saturday’s 2-1 success at Gander Green Lane also saw summer signing Ben Watson open his account for the Magpies.

And Simkin is hopeful that more goals will follow.

He said: “Ben has deserved his goal. I told him beforehand not to worry that he hadn’t scored as without him we would be lost.

“I told him the goal would come and thankfully it came on Saturday. I’m sure it will be the first of many.”

Dorchester could hand a debut to new loan signing Jake Gosling after midfielder Jamie Symes picked up a groin injury at the weekend.
