WEYMOUTH LADIES 1

BRISTOL LADIES UNION 4

WEYMOUTH Ladies gave the worst performance in their eight-year history when they were beaten 4-1 at the Bob Lucas Stadium by Bristol.

With a successful pre-season behind them, the hosts looked forward with great anticipation to the new season of South West League Premier Division football and the visit of a Bristol side tipped by many to be one of the favourites for the title.

For 20 minutes all seemed to be going well and Weymouth took a deserved lead when Amy Wild raced on to a Georgia Rogers through ball and lobbed the advancing keeper.

This should have been the platform the home side needed to take control of proceedings but instead it was Bristol who reacted and for the remainder of the match they totally dominated in every aspect.

Two quick goals before half-time put the visitors in charge and then two more in the second period rounded off an impressive victory.

Weymouth’s youngsters were given a footballing lesson against bigger, stronger, fitter players and very few of the home side came out of the game with any credit whatsoever.

A disappointed Weymouth manager Tim Davis said: “I would like to apologise to all the people who came and watched, and the sponsors, for a performance that was totally unacceptable.

“The girls have to take a long hard look at themselves as to why they played how they did.

“On paper we have the strongest squad we have ever had, pre-season has been great, Blondz have provided a new playing kit, Weymouth FC have provided the best stadium in the league and then you have to stomach watching an inept display like that.

“I will put this display down to a bad day at the office for all of us but will be looking for a response from the players beginning this Sunday away at Cheltenham.

“After the match we signed ex-Yeovil Town Ladies’ player-of-the-season and experienced centre-back Karen Perkins, who is a natural leader and organiser.

“She will come into the squad straight away.”
