TEAMS from across the area converged on Weymouth College to battle it out in the Slam Dunk the Funk Basketball Invitational.

A packed day of matches saw all three home teams compete against some of the county’s best, with around 60 players taking part in total.

Each side were keen to shake off the summer rust in preparation for the forthcoming campaign and organiser Alex Fuhrmann was delighted with the standard of competition.

He said: “It was a fantastic day. Having 60 players in the same area, all talking, discussing and competing in fast, action packed matches was superb.

“We had a good amount of spectators that came down to support the Weymouth teams and we hope, as we host this event each year, the word will spread.”

Highlights of the day included a very tough match-up between Weymouth Cowboys and Yeovil Jets who spent all game going back and forth, settling on a tie by the final whistle.

There was also an extremely rare happening for Fuhrmann himself. Whilst attempting to pass the ball to a fellow Weymouth Bandit, he launched the ball over the entire length of the court and inadvertently found the basket, causing a welcomed stir amongst those watching on.

Spectator Tanya Weakley added: “Weymouth’s three teams featured dozens of players from the borough who have been developing through the club over recent years, proving the effort and determination shown by Weymouth Basketball Club has been paying off.”

The new 2012/13 season is fast approaching with the Weymouth Raiders set to host Exmouth Jesters in their first home game at Weymouth College on September 27 (tip 8pm).
