FROME 31 WEYMOUTH 22

WEYMOUTH agonisingly missed out on their first point of the new campaign.

For the second week running the Mon-mouth Avenue outfit led at the break, but yet again they were pegged back in the second half to end up on the losing side.

And had it not been for a last-gasp try, Paul Harding’s newly promoted side would have at least secured some consolation in the form of a losing bonus point.

The head coach said: “We deserved to get a point out of it but we fell nine short and only scored three tries as opposed to four.

“We are disappointed not get anything but it’s a learning curve and the improvement was there from the previous week.

“It’s still early days and if we carry on improving like that it won’t be long before we get points on the board.”

Harding added: “They put a lot of pressure on us early doors, as you would expect being the home team, and they went hell for leather.

“But we defended really well, which was pleasing, and we weathered the storm. We got into our running and then scored a beautiful try on 15 minutes with Adam Hoxey getting over in the corner.

“We then scored a second try after building some pressure in their half. Tim Comben got on the back of a driving maul and his try was converted by Nick Sheppard.

“We were playing some really good stuff and we had definitely improved on the previous week.

“However, we gave away possession right at the end of the half and conceded a try, which made it 12-5. “They came at us in the second half, we conceded again and although we kicked a penalty they scored another try.

“A terrible bounce gave one of their guys a clear run and he scored to make it 20-15 before they kicked a penalty to go 23-15 up.

“We came back with another beautiful try that saw Idris Croft get over in the corner and at 23-22 it was anyone’s game.

“But that’s when our inexperience told as we had the opportunity to build some pressure but tried to do it too quickly or tried something too elaborate.

“They kicked another penalty and then scored a try right at the death, which flattered them a bit as I felt 26-22 would have been a fairer result.”

Weymouth are without a fixture this weekend.
