Individual errors cost Sports dear

INDIVIDUAL mistakes were the root cause of this disappointing defeat for Weymouth Sports in the Dorset Senior League.

The visitors were arguably the better side for the majority of the contest but they were unable to make their dominance count and paid the ultimate price against a clinical Piddletrenthide outfit.

Sports’ joint-boss Chris Hicks said: “Despite having a few players missing, we totally dominated and had three-quarters of it, if not more.

“We were the better team but individual errors gave them three chances and they took them.

“Fair play to them because they were clinical on the day but there was no doubt that we were the architects of our own downfall.”

Reflecting on the game in more detail, Hicks went on to add: “We started well and were knocking on the door in the opening 15 minutes.

“It was much better than the previous week and although they came into it a bit more after that we were still looking good.

“However, then came the first mistake and unfortunately it was down to me. I got my angles wrong on a back-pass and it allowed one of their lads to nip in and beat Glen Dear to make it 1-0.

“It was a disappointing goal to concede but we immediately got back into it and a good corner to the far post saw Marc Windust equalise.

“We then got on top again only to gift them another goal.

“This time Matt Dunlop dwelled on the ball a little too long and when he finally released it, it hit the back of one of their forwards and fell kindly into the path of one of their other players who stuck it away to put them 2-1 up at half-time.

“In the second half we then came out and dominated and were camped in their half, but we just could not convert that dominance into goals and ended up conceding a third late on.

“We pushed men into their box at a free-kick but instead of putting the ball in the mixer, Jelami Miles-Bell played it short and when we ended up losing possession they broke on us to go on and kill the game.

“It was very frustrating but we also learnt two big lessons from it and they were the best team does not always win and if you make mistakes at this level you are going to get punished for them.

“At least we know where we are going wrong and I am sure we will rectify the situation sooner rather than later.”

The defeat leaves Sports fourth-bottom having collected just two points from their opening three games.
