WEYMOUTH’S Toby Osmond is dreaming of Rio after earning a call to the headquarters of the British boxing squad.

The 17-year-old, recently named Best Senior at Weymouth Amateur Boxing Club, was invited to Sheffield to attend a training camp for some of the UK’s most promising boxers, following a nomination from his Western Counties coach.

And Osmond is also due to join up with the England squad as the long journey to the 2016 Olympics begins in earnest.

Describing his Yorkshire experience, the teenager said: “I was absolutely buzzing when I got told I had been invited to Sheffield, as boxing is all I want to do.

“I felt privileged to have been given the opportunity to train in such an awesome place, even if it was for such a short time.

“Apart from the sparring, it gave me an insight to the rigorous training and dedication needed for such a sport, including the lifestyle and diet.

“The weekend training gave me the opportunity to see what life would be like in Team GB. I would love to be invited back to further advance myself in the sport.

“The experience has strengthened my ambition to one day box for Team GB.”

Weymouth ABC president David Nelmes added: “The coaches were impressed by Toby’s work-rate and skills and he has been invited to an England squad session, in which they are looking at boys ready for the next Olympics in Rio.

“This is the start of a very long road for Toby but we are very proud of him and wish him well.

“If there is anybody that deserves this it is Toby. He is a good trainer, a good listener and is a very nice lad.

“He has been told it will not be easy but it is great for him, the club and our coaches.”

Osmond will be on the bill at Weymouth’s next show, which takes place at the Pavilion on November 17.
