SUPER-SUB Mark Ford has vowed to continue making an impact off the bench until he wins back a starting spot.

The 22-year-old has netted in both of Weymouth's last two games and also provided an assist but with Ben Joyce, Dan Smith and Matt Groves also vying for the attacking berths he knows he has to wait for his chance.

Ford told Echosport: “I am itching for a start. I was itching for one on Tuesday night against Gosport Borough but there is big competition up front and all I can do is keep doing what I am doing until an opportunity comes along.

“Over the last three weeks I have been feeling good.

“I had a chat with the manager and I feel really refreshed.

“He knows I want to be starting and if I can keep scoring and making goals for others when I come on then it is only going to help my cause.”

There is no doubting the quality of Ford’s finishing but he is fully aware he still needs to work on his hold-up play. Ford added: “I have been working on a few things with Matt Groves.

“We have had a few one-to-one sessions and I have been doing some other things as well.

“Matt, Ben and Dan are all quite experienced compared to me and I am learning a lot from them.”

The Terras, who travel to Bedworth United this afternoon (3pm), have picked up just eight points from their first nine games in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division but Ford is adamant that return does not reflect the quality of their performances.

He said: “We have been playing well but we just haven’t been getting the rub of the green.

“Just look at Gosport’s second goal the other night when we cleared the ball only for it to deflect to one of their guys who then hit a worldy from 30 yards.

“That goal really summed up what has been happening to us lately.

“I then had a chance later in the game only for the ball not to run on and instead get stuck under my feet.

“It is those fine margins that seem to be going against us at the minute but we have all experienced this type of thing before and we know if we continue working hard our fortunes will change.

“Hopefully that will happen today and we will get that win we desperately need. Once we get that I have no doubts it will start the ball rolling and we will begin climbing back up the table.”

The Terras have so far found the net 23 times in just 13 games in all competitions this season but due to injuries they have been struggling for consistency at the back.

Ford went on to say: “Injuries haven’t helped particularly with the majority of them having come in the same area.

“As a consequence, we haven’t been able to field a settled back four but hopefully over the next couple of weeks that will turn around too.

“There is no doubting the quality we have in the team - just look at Dan Smith for instance. He is on fire at the moment and attacking-wise things are looking good.

“Obviously we are disappointed with our current league position (17th) but the fact we have drawn five games shows we are not far away.

“I know it’s easy to say but turn those into wins and that is 10 more points on our tally which would see us in the top two.

“Like I said earlier, it’s a fine line at the moment but I am confident that if we keep plugging away it will all come good eventually.”
