THE Moonfleet summer season closed with a presentation evening where Irene Martindill led the way having recorded a hat-trick of wins in the competition.

Firstly in the mixed set singles, she took on Bryan Allen in a best of five sets first to score seven format.

In the first set, a tight contest was settled when Martindill, leading 5-4, picked up a vital two to win.

She dominated the second set, taking it 7-0, but in the third, Allen fought back and was holding a 6-2 lead before Martindill picked up a three and a two off the next two ends to take the title.

Martindill then teamed up with her husband Brian in the pairs competition where they took on June Evans and Chris Thompson.

In a tight first half, the Martindills led 12-11 after 12 ends.

They then won five out of the next six ends to open up a gap of six shots and despite an excellent three from the Thompson pair, the Martindills claimed the title 23-17.

Her hat-trick of wins arrived when she teamed up with Rod Wakefield and Alan Kempster in the drawn triples where they met Kathy Cody, June Evans and Brian Martindill.

The Kempster trio took control from the start and eased their way to a comfortable 19-6 victory.

Alan Kempster then took his second title when he teamed up with Chris Thompson in the Australian pairs where they met Mel Barlow and Bryan Allen.

The Allen pair held a slender 9-8 lead after eight ends but a three and four off the next two ends from the Kempster duo gave them a six-shot advantage as they went on to record a 23-16 victory.

In the triples competition, June and Tony Bolt were joined by Norman Byden and they took on Dave and Pete Drage with Amanda Williams.

The Byden trio held the early advantage with a 9-5 lead after 10 ends and then went on to dominate the second half, running out comfortable 22-7 winners.

Finally in the drawn pairs, Drage and Jack Mathie faced Irene Martindill and Ernie Gordon and a close contest ensued with the scores 12 apiece after 12 ends.

There was still little between the teams at 15 ends with the Mathie duo holding a two-shot lead but they then gradually eased away to end Martindill’s hopes of a fourth title, with a 24-17 success.
