WEYMOUTH instructor Maurice ‘Mo’ Teague is set to be inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

The award, which is organised by Martial Arts Illustrated Magazine, recognises Teague’s 40-year association with the sport, which began in the old Sidney Hall near where Asda now stands.

Speaking to Echosport, Teague said: “It all started during the Bruce Lee era when everyone was ‘Kung Fu Fighting’.

“There were more than 100 people crammed into the hall for the first class, a year later, there were about a dozen left, the reality of dedication and hard work had proven too much for most.”

Since that time Teague has taught around the world and featured in many books, magazines and DVDs.

His speciality now is training security personnel including bodyguards and military and law enforcement units around the world, including the Middle East.

He is also the chief instructor at the Weymouth Martial Arts Centre, which continues to train men, women and children of all ages and abilities.

When asked about his forthcoming Hall of Fame accolade, Teague said: “It is the ultimate award because it is voted for by our industry and peer group, so I feel very honoured.

“I have been very fortunate in many ways to travel the world teaching and I have met some fantastic people and have some great memories.

“It has just been incredible really and I still get the same buzz out of it today.”

Among Teague’s many qualifications is an instructorship under Grand Master Richard Bustillo, who was a close personal friend and student of Lee’s.

Going on to comment on the Weymouth Martial Arts Centre, he added: “We take children from the age of three and currently also have members approaching their 60s.

“It is going very well and there is a lot of talent there.

“We also do a lot of work with people that have been affected by alcohol and drug abuse, as well as youngsters that have lost their way a bit.

“Martial Arts is very fulfilling and I would advise anyone interested in taking it up to give it a go.”

The Weymouth Martial Arts Centre is one of several good clubs in the area but anyone wishing to take up the sport is advised to check each instructor’s qualifications and affiliations first.
