BREEZY conditions with gusts of up to 35 knots this weekend are set to ensure an exhilarating start for a European freestyle windsurfing competition.

Centaur King of the Wind Festival, the final of the European Freestyle Pro Tour event 2012, will begin tomorrow and run until Tuesday.

The event, hosted by the Official Test Centre at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, will see the new European freestyle windsurfing champion crowned.

The freestyle windsurfing competition will run from 11am to 5.30pm daily.

On Monday night, in honour of Guy Fawkes night, there will be a ‘Night Tow In Supersession’, accompanied by a sound truck, at 6.30pm in front of 15,000 spectators on Weymouth Beach.

The town’s traditional bonfire night and firework display will take place from 7pm.

OTC managing director Tris Best said: “A Red Bull jet-ski will be towing the best windsurfers in for a competition.

“It will be the cream of the crop, they’ll be towed in at quite a rate of knots and then will basically try and do their best manoeuvres right in front of the judges.

“It should be quite a spectacle.”

Competitors will start their partying at the Opening Global Rave VIP Party at Lazy Lizard.

The closing ceremony will take place on Tuesday when the champion will be crowned.

Almost €6,000 in prize money is up for grabs across all the competitions.
