HAVING been on holiday in Weymouth in 2011, Andrew Evans “fell in love” with the tall ship Pelican when she was moored in the harbour.

Having done some research in person, on the web, and taken a trial sail, he was hooked.

Andrew said: “I was concerned about how it would feel to crew on a tall ship at the age of 70, but the experience was fantastic.”

It was so good that in 2012 he signed up to crew on the voyage from Weymouth to London for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Although he had some experience of sailing it was a “whole new adventure on the high seas”.

In 2013, he sailed on her from Whitehaven in Cumbria to Denmark, and in July is due to be part of the crew taking her from Liverpool to Harlingen for the start of the Tall Ships Race.

Andrew added: “I have finished each voyage with a great feeling of achievement and satisfaction.

Sailing on a tall ship has been such an adventure and I would recommend it to anyone.

“If I can complete a voyage at 72 years of age, so can you.”

TS Pelican is owned by the charity Adventure Under Sail.
