A young sailor from Portland has received a £1,500 sponsorship boost from his local Wilkinson store on Westham Road, Weymouth.

James Bishop, 15, has been sailing competitively for the past six years and plans to put the money towards funding a new boat, which he hopes will help him achieve even better results on the water.

The donation was made as part of Wilkinson’s Local Star initiative which sponsors individuals from across the country who either have a special talent, are an inspiration to others or help in their local community.

Bishop sails a Laser Radial and has been selected for the RYA Laser Radial Transitional Squad, placing him among the top 12 under-16 sailors in the country.

Wilkinson Weymouth store manager Tim Williams said: “It’s always really inspiring to hear about the amazing talent we have in our area and the Local Stars fund is our way of helping them on their journey, whether it’s volunteer work, sporting activities or nurturing their skills.

“James is a fantastic representative for our town and we hope the sponsorship money goes a long way in funding his brand new boat.”

James, of Weare Close, added: “I’m really grateful for the sponsorship from Wilkinson and it will make a difference when it comes to stepping up my sailing.

“My family and friends are always so supportive but it’s nice to know I’ve got the backing of a local business as well.

“I only hope I can make Weymouth proud on the waves.”
