THE longest-running sailing event in the world, Weymouth Speed Week has been taking place this week.

The annual event is always exciting with specially designed craft taking to the water with the more commonly seen ones.

Alongside them, there have been sailors, windsurfers and kite surfers all competing to break the Weymouth Speed Week records.

The competitors have been racing over a laid course of 500 metres with their speed being recorded on GPS.

The week has seen a mixture of conditions for the fleet to enjoy. On Monday, the high winds were much appreciated. Windsurfing star and a competitor at many of the Speed Week events Kevin Greenslade said: “It has been really good conditions for Speed Week and my results have been good. I am really enjoying it so far."

Other competitors were also excited about the forecast for Tuesday but the wind direction made the water very choppy within Portland Harbour.

The conditions on Wednesday and Thursday sadly did not replicate those earlier in the week.

The competitors will be taking to the water for the last day of Speed Week 2014 today.
