WEYMOUTH Sailing Club (WSC) Cadets recently celebrated a superb 2014 season with their annual awards evening.

Family and friends turned out to see the young members collect their awards from races during last season, as well as special trophies for other achievements such as volunteering and windsurfing.

Phil and Daphne Samways, who organise the youth section, arranged for Paralympic sailing star Megan Pascoe to help present the trophies.

Pascoe also brought along the unique and beautiful trophy she won for coming first at the 2.4mR class World Championships.

Among those receiving trophies were Cory Ronayne for being the first cadet in several race series, Sam Mottershead for his volunteering at the club, Scotty Stallman for his windsurfing achievements and Alexandra Stevenson for finishing first in several races.

Harry Owens won the trophy for best newcomer and kept the prize in the family, as his cousin Sam Avant won it last year.

As part of the evening, members of the cadets voted for their new captain and the successful candidate was Avant, who has become a regular racer at WSC.

He also won his first trophy for winning one of the race series.

In addition to a huge thank you to the Samways family for all that they do for the youngsters, the other helpers who are so important to the success of the Cadets were also acknowledged.

The evening was concluded with a buffet, disco and fundraising raffle.

The cadets are now looking forward to the 2015 sailing season and hope that it will be as successful as last year.
