WEYMOUTH Sea Cadets’ members have been excelling in regattas at district and regional level.

The Weymouth unit was among nine from across Dorset and Somerset to take part in a series of competitions which made up the District Regatta.

Each regatta featured the same classes, namely Bosun, Topper, Laser Pico and a PY class where individuals could select the vessel they wanted to compete in.

Weymouth’s unit, TS Boscawen, returned a number of great results and were the overall winners of the District Regatta.

In the Bosun class, Harry Owens, a member of Weymouth Sailing Club (WSC), and Sam Skelson placed first with Danyel Cornick and Auorla Taylor-Phelps in second.

The Topper class saw Joe Cornick take the win with Ben Thomas in second, while another WSC member, Alfie Honeybun, was the winner of the Pico class.

Their overall victory meant Weymouth went on to represent Dorset and Somerset in the South West Area Regatta held at HMS Bristol in Portsmouth.

There were a total of 11 units participating and the standard of sailing was exceptionally high with 18 boats in each class.

Owens and Skelson had to settle for second in the Bosun class, with Cornick and Taylor-Phelps ninth.

In the Topper fleet, Thomas finished in third place and Joe Cornick achieved ninth, while Harrison Patrick finished second and Honeybun was third in the Pico class.

Sara Cornick of Weymouth Sea Cadets said: “This was the first year that we have entered the regatta as a unit and I know I speak on behalf of all the staff at Weymouth Sea Cadets when I say we are so proud of our team and their achievements.

“We did have some help from two very experienced sailors who deserve a massive thank you for their time, effort and coaching.

“Antony Frost and Ben Fuller are both former cadets from the northern area who now work at the Sea Cadet Training Centre here in Weymouth.”

It was a great experience for the young sailors and something which the Weymouth unit can take pride in.
