PORTLAND’S Megan Pascoe secured victory at the latest Royal Yachting Association (RYA) National Ranking Event.

Held at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Pascoe got the better of Paralympic gold medallist Helena Lucas in the 2.4m class.

More than 15 boats took part in 10 races across two days of racing in the third and final Autumn Series event, which also saw the 49er, 49er FX, 470 Men, 470 Women, 470 Mixed and Finn classes competing.

Racing throughout the event was extremely close and the significant wind shifts on the course were a real test of skill for the competitors.

Pascoe completed the event with a great set of results, including five wins, three second places, one third place and an On Course Side (OCS) penalty which was her discarded result.

Portland-based Lucas, who will compete at next year’s Paralympics in Rio, pushed Pascoe throughout and finished on the same number of points overall.

Fortunately for Pascoe, she won the last race of the event to be crowned champion.

And to add to the delight of winning, Pascoe was also crowned the winner of the Autumn Series, having also won the previous RYA National Ranking Event.

Pascoe said: “It is nice to be back in a 2.4, although I’m a bit out of practice.

“The weekend was good to see how fast I am going.”

The next event for Pascoe will be the World Championships in Melbourne starting late next month.
