DESPITE demanding conditions, nearly ten 10 boats made their way into Weymouth Bay for the Boxing Day race.

The annual race this year saw the wind strength peak at more than 40 knots numerous times, for one brave boat, this resulted in a unfortunate broken boom.

Only seven of the boats successfully completed the race.

Conditions on the day resulted in the Squib’s Icebreaker Trophy Race being cancelled leaving only the keelboats to compete for the Frostbite Trophy.

As is customary, the finish line was in the harbour opposite the Sailing Club and also in keeping with a long tradition, the finish of each boat was marked by a cannon being fired. Spectators lined the quayside and much enjoyed the spectacle.

A number of the crews entered into the festive spirit, dressing up as elves and Santa Clauses.

In particular, Jerry Thompson and crew onboard “Jurassic Coaster” won a bottle of wine for the best dressed boat.

The overall results showed Nick Massey and crew onboard “Tumbarumba” as the winners, each of the crew members winning a Harken beenie hat.

Second place was achieved by Gary Owens and crew onboard Jammy Dodger and third place went to Rick Bruton and team on Passion. Steve Dadds on Rumrunner finished fourth being beaten by just 16 sixteen seconds. Of note were the efforts of the crew onboard Farr Out who despite a strong position sailing into Weymouth Harbour, grounded near the Sea Cadet moorings. On arrival at the club, all were met with a buffet of food kindly provided by members.

The 2015 season is now completed.
