A PROMISING young windsurfer has set himself some ambitious goals for 2016.

Weymouth starlet Sam Anstey hopes to achieve a top-10 result in the in the Amateur fleet of the British Slalom Association (BSA) Series.

At just 14 years old, Anstey already has a creditable list of results since starting windsurfing when he joined Wey Valley School three years ago.

It was through the Will Mackaness Trust, which gives many young people the opportunity to try watersports, that he took part in a Start Windsurfing course at the Official Test Centre and loved it.

Talking about his love of the sport, he said: “There are loads of things I really love about windsurfing.

“One of the best things is going out at the weekend at either Portland, Overcombe or anywhere and sailing with my mates and having great fun and a really good time.

“I also really enjoy trying new things in the sport and learning new skills.”

Last season’s highlights included placing second youth at Weymouth Speed Week and achieving second in the under-17 in the BSA Amateur Series.

One achievement the youngster is most proud of was finishing as the top youth in the Masterblaster fleet during the BSA Series two years ago.

He had only been windsurfing for two years at the time and had not expected to achieve such a great result.

Tris Best of the Official Test Centre said: “Sam is probably the most polite person you’ll ever have the pleasure of meeting.

“He is always smiling and happy, yet has natural sporting talent to back it up on the water.

“He learns new skills super quickly and seems to enjoy every discipline he tries, from slalom competition to wave sailing.

“In the future, I predict he will be capable of anything he puts his mind to, whether it be in windsurfing or any of the other sports he excels in.

“He has a maturity that belies his age and he would make a fantastic instructor if he chose to go down that path.”

Anstey is hoping to attend all of the events in the BSA Series this season, gain a result in the top 10 of the Amateur fleet and improve his wave sailing skills.

In preparation, ace Anstey is attending the National Watersports Festival’s Winter Training Series which is held on his doorstep at the Official Test Centre every month.

He added: “We improve our starts, gybes and practice races as well.

“On top of that I try and get out on the water whenever the wind is good.”

Anstey is exceptionally grateful for the support and encouragement he has received.

“I really need to thank the Will Mackaness Trust for allowing pupils like me to try out new sports and, in particular, Tris Best from the Official Test Centre and his great instructors for their help and encouragement and use of the kit.”
