A LOCAL Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Club had the pleasure of hosting the final of the SUP National Tour.

Jurassic SUP held the eighth and last event of the summer season welcoming more than 70 competitors.

Portland Marina were once again kind enough to support the event and allow paddlers to use their facilities and launch from their pontoons.

The course ran inside the Marina, sheltered from the easterly wind and edged out into wilder water to give just enough excitement to keep competitors on their toes.

Paddler Sally Newman said: “Thanks so much to everyone.

“I had a brilliant day.

“My most favourite race of the season.”

Jurassic SUP is heavily supported by two local businesses, adventurous activity provider, Adventure 4 All and watersports shop, 109 Watersports.

After the event, Callum Edge from 109 Watersports said: “SUP is an amazing activity and we are proud to be able to give something back to the sport.”

On the day, local volunteers gave up time to ensure that the event ran both smoothly and safely.

There were five classes across different lengths of board and split between hard and inflatable boards.

A highlight of racing was a strong performance by Stuart Appleby, who provided a convincing win in the Naish One class with a skilled performance.

After the event, a prize giving and meal were held at the Boat that Rocks, who provided a great venue for a post race social.

Further races are already being planned for 2017.

Alex Sergison from Adventure 4 All said: “Weymouth and Portland is an incredible venue for SUP and we can’t wait to build on the amazing summer we have had in 2016 and continue developing the sport locally.”
