Blues skies for the first race of year

WEYMOUTH Sailing Club's New Year's Day race was blessed with bright sunshine and blue skies and twice as many boats as last years lined up for this open event.

One entrant sailed his boat from the new Portland Marina into the biting northerly breeze to compete.

After finishing outside the WSC club house he then sailed back to Portland and was accompanied by three dolphins as he sailed back through the northern entrance.

Jez Rees helming Farr Out took line honours and was presented with a bottle of Champagne which was donated by Kay and Kevin Stibbs off Draig D'or Mor.

Once back into the warmth of WSC headquarters on Nothe Parade, members held their annual spirit draw for the Weymouth lifeboat, the prizes all being donated by the clubs committee members.

In other news, club members have voted for their new handbook cover photograph, taken by club member Iain Jones, it depicts Farr Out involuntary gibing in strong winds during a club race.

The club has taken delivery of a new fork lift truck, capable of lifting one and a half tonnes to a height of six metres it replaces WSC's existing ageing machine which has been offered for sale.

The ever popular Boxing Day races for both Squibs and Cruises saw the large turn out of boats greeted by sunshine, blue skies and a cold north westerly wind.

The finish, outside of the club, was packed with locals watching the boats sail up the river Wey and recieve a cannon blast to acknowledge their finish.

Ricky Bruton In Sapphire won the Frostbite cup whilst Dave MacCune took the Icebreaker trophy in the Squibs.
