WEYMOUTH COLLEGE TROPICS 49 WINCHESTER 14

THE Tropics continued their sensational unbeaten season with impressive wins against Gosport and Winchester.

In their first game of the day, the Weymouth outfit took on a taller Gosport side that looked strong in the warm-up.

Stifled by their opponents’ height advantage to begin with, the Tropics did start trading baskets before taking a double digit lead.

Led by Max Gilmartin on offence and Rev Santos on defence, Weymouth were able to build an impressive 30-point lead which allowed all of the squad to get game time.

The Tropics’ second contest was a different affair as, although Win-chester lacked some of the height of Gosport, they were able to put up a solid zone defence.

This allowed them to keep Eric Robertshaw and Dan Hampson away from the rebounds and keep the match competitive for the first quarter.

However, the Tropics switched their offence set and Jerry Thompson stepped up to guard Winchester’s giant centre.

Thompson worked hard throughout the game to maintain his team’s defence and that meant the offence could surge to a 49-14 advantage.

With the lead stretched, the Tropics were again able to rotate their entire roster and show why they are aiming for a league title in their debut season.

Tropics’ coach Alex Fuhrmann said: “It was a fantastic day of basketball capped off by some great individual performances.

“We’ve got great maturity going forward and I just hope we can maintain it for the forthcoming months.”

Tropics: Max Gilmartin, Jerry Thompson, Luke Strong, Dan Hampson, Kim DeLeon, Rev Santos, Bruce Florentino, Eric Robertshaw, Ewan Goodwin, Matt Williams-Davey.
