THE Portland Red Triangle Legends XI and Pirates Select faced off to help raise funds towards Macmillan Nurses, the chosen charity of former Triangle player Melvyn Tremlin.

Despite the high winds and rain at the WindowMan Oval, Reforne, the players were able to dodge the showers to play out an entertaining encounter.

Dave Baxter presented the match ball after the toss and the Legends side were invited to bat first.

Openers Elliott Sawyer (50) and Matt Randell (39) shared an 85-run partnership.

The Pirates got back into the game with a probing spell from Ashworth (3-40) who picked up the wicket of Randell along with the returning Jan Davey.

Jon Dixon hit a trademark quickfire 28, before he holed out at long-off with Tony Quayle taking a fine catch on the run. Ryan Price (13) found the safe hands of Michael Colebrooke on the boundary and his dismissal saw the Legends declare on 157-6.

Pirates’ skipper Quayle led from the front with a composed innings of 54, containing nine fours, before he retired.

Colebrooke (18), Ade Wilson (17) and Pete Gorsuch (22no) also chipped in with useful knocks, but the Pirates fell short by 15 runs at the close. Joe Adkins was the pick of the Legends’ bowlers, taking 2-23.

Tony Quayle said: “I would like to thank everyone who turned out. Both sides braved the conditions to put on a good show and hopefully the proceeds from the game will go to do some good.”
