GRANT Neven is set to return to Uganda next year as a volunteer with Cricket Without Boundaries.

The Portland Red Triangle stalwart has been chosen as a team leader for the trip, which will take place from February 23-March 9.

Neven, who embarked on a similar trip earlier this year, now needs to raise a minimum of £1,500 to cover the project costs.

Since its formation in 2005, CWB has become one of the world’s leading Cricket Development and AIDS awareness charities, which is run almost entirely by its volunteers.

It is dedicated to educating and developing local communities around the world through the growth of cricket, and is about personal empowerment for adults and children.

Working primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, it has sent projects to Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia, and in the process has coached tens of thousands of youngsters.

Of equal importance to the charity is the use of cricket as a tool in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

In an area of the world where almost 25 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, CWB sets out to combine sport with clear health messages.

CWB’s training sessions involve discussion and practical demonstrations of simple cricket and non-cricket related drills that deal with HIV/AIDS, both in terms of prevention and treatment.

But it is not just about staying healthy, it is also about ensuring equality of treatment for those with the disease.

Meanwhile, Neven will be holding his ‘Stumpy’s Cricket Extravaganza’ at the Wyke Smugglers on Saturday, November 9 from 5pm onwards.

This will be a cricket-themed evening of fundraising for the charity cricketwithoutboundaries.

There will be a £5 entry free, which includes tea and a quiz. There will also be live music and a raffle.
