THE future of the Weymouth & District Evening Cricket League is set to be reassessed later this year after the competition was left with just four teams for the remainder of the current campaign.

Only five sides – Famous Old Spa, Saggies, PRT George Inn, Portland Arms and Budmouth – signed up for the 2015 season.

Matches got under way earlier this month following fears the league may not have gone ahead at all, but it has already suffered its first casualty with PRT George Inn dropping out.

League chairman Bill Trevett raised concerns over the competition’s health before a ball had been bowled, with the number of teams taking part having dwindled severely over recent years.

“I was speaking to people from Bournemouth over the weekend and they said it’s the same over their way,” said Trevett.

“We’re going to struggle on with four and then perhaps look to do a few new things next year to get more teams playing.”

He went on to add: “We used to wait until the following April to hold our awards night, but we’re going to bring that forward to July now.

“We’ve also spoken to the Dorchester evening league about the possibility of a game against them.

“This league has been going since 1928, I think, so it would be sad if it had to stop.”
