WEYMOUTH 46 (0pts) lost to STALBRIDGE 47-1 (20pts) by 9 wickets

IF YOU were planning to stroll down to Redlands to catch the second innings of the Seasiders’ clash with Stalbridge on Saturday, you would have been bitterly disappointed.

The hosts won the toss and were skittled out in rapid time against their rampant opposition, who showed no mercy, knocking the total off in a flash to condemn Kieron Womble’s charges to their eighth defeat of the campaign in a blink of an eye.

“It had finished around quarter to three,” the Weymouth captain told Echosport. The contest began at 1pm.

“You try and be as positive as you can but they bowled well and just knocked us over really.

“It was incredibly embarrassing for the club and I would say fair play to Stalbridge.

“They didn’t over celebrate and they know the situation we are in, they were quite gracious.

“When we were all out in around 20 overs it made the game feel incredibly short and they knocked them off in such a short time.

“I have been involved in low totals but never in a game as quick as that.

“All these problems do mount up at the end of the day but I think, realistically, it couldn’t have got any worse than it did on Saturday.”

But the skipper, who is set to be part of the club’s Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on Friday evening (7pm) has no intentions of walking away, as long as the future of the club can be resolved.

Asked if he had considered stepping down, Womble added: “No I haven’t really.

“It would be easy to walk away to be honest, we have lost so many games now.

“The club as a whole needs to come together and sort this out and I hope on Friday there will be a lively debate but debate for the future of the club.

“I have been involved with Weymouth for a long time and there are a lot of people out there who do want me to keep going, and I will do, but that’s as long as the future of the club can be sorted.”

Also reacting to the defeat and the club’s current plight, Seasiders’ seamer David Trotter added: “We are all trying our best to keep the club going and survive.

“We just have to try and play as a team, move forward, and try to win a couple of games which would be really nice.”
