WEYMOUTH 113 (1pt) lost to POOLE TOWN 116-1 (20pts) by 9 wickets

DEAN Janaway’s stoic half-century was the highlight for the visitors as Weymouth’s dismal losing streak was extended against league big guns Poole.

Opening the innings at Poole Park after the Seasiders won the toss and elected to bat, Janaway got to 50 before being caught off the bowling of Joe Wormington.

His innings was the stand out display for temporary skipper Paul Payne’s charges – regular captain Kieron Womble was unavailable.

Only all-rounder Simon Browne and seamer Alex Mortimore also managed to reach double figures as the visitors were bowled out for 113 in 39.2 overs. Extras proved the second biggest contributor with 19 in the Weymouth total behind Janaway’s knock.

For Poole, Joe Wilson produced a flawless performance with the ball to make his way through the Seasiders’ middle order and tail. He claimed six wickets for just nine runs in a clinical 9.2 overs.

And while paceman Mortimore managed to dislodge Poole opener Brewster Surridge in reply when he was caught by Janaway for just eight, Poole’s Badrul Alam (53no) and Tom Robinson (44no) guided the title-chasing hosts home with ease inside 20 overs to give them maximum points from the contest.

The result also means Poole take top spot in the Dorset Premier League table as Sherborne narrowly lost at home to Wimborne & Colehill.

Meanwhile, rock bottom Weymouth, who are set to step down at least one division no matter what next term, are now a mammoth 65 points behind rivals Dorchester in the standings.

Seasiders chairman John Ryan, who featured in the match, told Echosport: “We got off to a decent start and Janners made a good 50.

“There were a couple of small partnerships but he stood alone and was unlucky. If he had gone on and batted longer who knows. “The target was to try and get 200 on a slightly indifferent wicket that was doing a bit.

“It was a bit green so technically we would normally put them in but we needed to change it up. We haven’t won a game so we thought we would try something different and everyone agreed.

“When you score 113 you automatically know that if they get off to a fast start that’s it.”

Weymouth will be looking to restore some pride when rivals Dorchester, who beat them earlier in the campaign, visit Redlands this Saturday.

Elsewhere, Weymouth Seconds recorded their fourth win of the season in County Division Three, beating Kingston Lacy by 29 runs.
