REPLACEMENT skipper Will McKay is hoping to have the magic touch to bring Weymouth their first Premier League win of the season.

The rock-bottom Seasiders, without a victory in 13 games this term, could have relegation confirmed this weekend if results do not go their way.

In the absence of regular captain Kieron Womble, McKay is stepping in to the hotseat for their clash at Redlands with Parley tomorrow (1pm).

“I was vice-captain for Kieron last year and when he asked I was happy to help,” McKay told Echosport.

“I have captained Weymouth sides but I don’t think I have ever captained the first-team before, not that I can remember anyway.

“I have all amounts of respect for Kieron for doing it. I think he has done a great job over the last couple of years.

“We have played together since we were eight or nine years old and I am just going to carry on Kieron’s work.

“He has always got a team out, admittedly it’s not the same every week which you really need to challenge for the league but our side is not a million miles away from when we were fourth last season.”

Speaking about the club’s struggles to fill two teams this term, McKay believes the Seasiders are not the only team in the county with a similar issue.

He added: “I have a lot of friends at other clubs in the Dorset league and they are all saying the exactly same thing.

“It’s not like they are all getting 50 players to choose from for two sides each week. Very few sides are getting a consistent team so we are not alone.”

Former champions Parley, who also compete in the Hampshire Cricket League, have elected to field a youthful group in their Dorset squad this season, some weeks with an average age of just 17.

But McKay knows his team will have to perform well to compete against their talented opposition.

He claimed: “I know their team changes quite a lot depending on how they are going in the other league.

“They tend to pack their side with a lot of young kids who are very good kids. You can’t really predict who they are going to put out.

“I am not expecting to go out there make 400 and bowl them out for 50. Parley will be a very good side regardless of who they put out so it’s going to be a tough game.

“It’s just a case of us getting that winning mentality back.”

Meanwhile, Weymouh Seconds are due to visit Ashmore in County Division Three tomorrow.
