BROADSTONE 139 (3pts) lost to DORCHESTER 140-3 (20pts) by 7 wickets

DORCHESTER dispatched Broadstone with the minimum of fuss on Saturday, claiming their sixth Dorset Premier League triumph of the summer in the process.

The visitors went into the game at Dorchester Rec with a slim chance of beating Sherborne and Poole to the title, but any hopes they had were extinguished by a resurgent home side.

League positions counted for nothing as the hosts bowled out Broadstone for just 139 before knocking off the runs required inside 40 overs.

After the heavy rain in the days leading up to the clash, Dorchester skipper Simon Mitchem had no hesitation in bowling first on winning the toss.

And it was a real team effort in the field from the county town outfit, with six of the seven bowlers picking up at least one wicket each.

Only Carlyle Collins in the middle order got to grips with the Dorchester attack and a pitch that contained quite a bit of moisture in it.

Collins fell three short of his half-century when he was caught by Dan Belt off Pete Moxom (2-12), who also showed his sharpness in the field with a run out.

In fact, only three Broadstone batsmen reached double figures as Belt (1-11), Pete Horne (2-30), Will Caldwell (1-24), Dan Morris (1-8) and Mitchem (2-26) did the damage.

In reply, Dorchester took advantage of a rapidly drying wicket to reach their target relatively comfortably.

Caldwell and Moxom (17) put on 29 for the first wicket before the latter was dismissed by Steve Trembath.

However, Caldwell and Mitchem added a further 69 to take Dorchester towards three figures.

Opener Caldwell had moved to 45 when he was trapped leg before by Om Ramchandani, and then Belt went the same way without scoring.

But Mitchem (64 not out) was still there at the end with Ian Legg as the hosts sealed the win and collected a full house of 20 points.

“Winning the toss was so important because the pitch dried out as the day went on,” said Mitchem.

“We bowled and field very well. We put the ball in good areas and that’s what you always want.

“We then got over the line without too much drama and it was nice to get back to winning ways.”
