DORSET’S David Payne helped Gloucestershire seal the Royal London Cup at Lord’s today.

The former Bournemouth and Parley left-arm seamer took two wickets in three balls in a dramatic final over to ensure victory in the first domestic final of his career.

Jack Taylor's contribution with ball and bat ultimately proved decisive in the tensest of finishes, as Gloucestershire defied Jade Dernbach's career-best bowling, and his hat-trick, which included Payne earlier in the day, for good measure.

Gloucestershire also delivered a memorably heartening farewell for former England wicketkeeper Geraint Jones, whose hard-working half-century in his final match rescued a competitive 220 all out.

Surrey then fell six runs short on 214 all out, after a third-wicket century stand between Kumar Sangakkara (60) and Rory Burns (56) had appeared to put them on course for a comfortable chase.

Instead, two wickets dramatically fell to Payne as he was entrusted with bowling the final over.

Teenager Sam Curran and Surrey captain Gareth Batty both fell to the 24-year-old and the Lytchett Minster schoolboy, whose family were in the crowd at Lord’s on the day, went wild as the result was sealed with three balls left.
