DORSET’S David Payne admits his Lord’s final heroics “still hasn’t sunk in” after two wickets at the death won Gloucestershire the Royal London One-Day Cup.

The former Parley and Bournemouth left-armer, who plied his trade as a youngster in the Dorset League before being snapped up by the Bristol-based professional outfit, also wished to thank a number of people from around the Dorset setup for their congratulations.

Asked to describe bowling the last over at the home of cricket, in which he claimed two victims to win the game against Surrey, Payne told Echosport: “I knew at some point I was going to get the nod and was just trying to stay as calm as possible.

“At the top of my mark I was trying to take it all in and thought this could be the only time I ever get to do it. I tried to enjoy it and embrace it.”

Describing the match-winning moment, he added: “It still hasn’t sunk in.

“There were no thoughts because I was screaming so loud! Guys were running all over the shop, I didn’t know where to go.”

He added: “I can’t thank enough people for how I have got to here. Parley have been tweeting me and I loved playing every minute for them.

“It’s always great to have a local lad do well I suppose and everyone has been very supportive. I am very appreciative of that.”
