WEYMOUTH 267-7 (19pts) beat BROADSTONE II 241-8 (11pts) by 26 runs

A SUBLIME unbeaten 121 from Weymouth skipper Simon Browne guided the Seasiders to their second win of the season in County Division One – and out of the bottom two.

Aided by Paul Payne (52), Browne put the Broadstone Seconds attack to the sword in an innings which lasted more than two hours at Delph Woods.

With some late assistance from youngster Harry Mitchell (18no) the Weymouth all-rounder propelled his side to a whopping 267-7 from 45 overs – Browne’s innings coming off just 94 deliveries.

And with Broadstone penalised two overs in the chase having taken too long to bowl their allotted 45, they fell 27 runs short of their victory target.

Weymouth’s Dom Webb picked up 3-31 from six overs and Graham Puckett was economical with 1-22 from his nine.

Speaking about his innings, Browne told Echosport: “I said to the guys before the game that we really needed to stop relying on the idea that somebody is going to score some runs and all do our bit.

“I suppose by making that statement I thought I better do my bit as well!

“I didn’t score a run for about 14 or 15 balls, something like that. I tend to start off relatively slowly anyway and Payner was dispatching the ball well.

He got his 50 and I was just playing a supporting role.

“Once he got out I thought I needed to stick around and see if I could get a few. The wickets fell pretty steadily for a while then.

“I was seeing it pretty well and balls were going all over the place at the end.

“It was nice to get three figures, it hasn’t happened for a good few years.”
