MARTINSTOWN captain Ed Nichols is looking forward to seeing whether he gets the call to be looked at by the Dorset selectors this winter.

The opening batsman and wicketkeeper, who finished the summer as the second highest run scorer in the Dorset Funeral Plan Premier Division behind Dorchester’s Dan Belt, insists he is “due a winter at home” and would welcome any call from the county set-up.

Nichols scored a whopping 750 runs in the league across 17 innings this summer, at an average of 46.88.

His form also got him a call-up to the Dorset Leopards’ squad, the development side that plays under the Minor Counties team, in the latter stages of the season.

In an interview with Echosport last week, Dorset captain Chris Park said: “All the guys who have played Leopards this year will be invited throughout the winter and myself and Prich (Paul Prichard, coach) will have a closer look at them.”

Asked whether being a part of Dorset’s winter training schedule is something that would interest him, Nichols said: “I don’t know the details and I will wait to hear, but it sounds great.

“I really would look forward to it, as or when I’m invited to be involved.

“To train with guys of that quality would be great. I have really enjoyed the Leopards’ stuff and to see some of those faces outside of the season and keep in touch would be absolutely brilliant.”

It has not always been a quiet winter for the villagers’ captain however, having spent a couple of spells across the globe during the off season.

He added: “In the past I have had a couple of winters away and I have had a lot of cricket to play in the winter.

“I went to western Australia from January to March, which was brilliant. I couldn’t buy a run but it was a brilliant experience.

“Last winter I did some coaching in a school in South Africa and played over in Stellenbosch.

“It might not be the case as much this winter, so anything that will keep me ticking over in the off season would be absolutely brilliant.”
