CHARLTON DOWN 129 (6pts) lost to WIMBORNE & COLEHILL II 215-8 (20pts)

AN EXPERIENCED Wimborne & Colehill Seconds side, fielding nine players over the age of 30, inflicted a third successive defeat on Charlton Down.

Wimborne batted first and found the pace and accuracy of returning trainee pilot Matt Stevens and swing bowling of Dan Stevens hard to handle.

Both openers Darren Jones (22) and Adam Childs (37) lived charmed lives as they were both dropped twice early on.

Change bowlers James Pretty and Kim Park bowled well keeping up the pressure and containing the batsmen, and it was James Pretty (2-23) who struck first, nailing Jones lbw for 22 with the score on 51-1 at the 15-over break.

The pressure eventually told with Tom Butcher (12) smashing a full-toss straight to Pete Tucker and then Childs’ luck finally ran out when Park bowled him for 37 with the score on 87-3 at the halfway stage of 22 overs.

Pretty claimed his second wicket in his last over to finish with fine figures from nine overs with the score on 108-4.

Javed Gill then bowled over-50s’ captain Chris Dunk for 14 with the score on 138-5. Debutant bowler 15-year-old Lewis Harrington (1-22) claimed his first senior wicket when he bowled Lee Naylor (7) and Wimborne were struggling on 150-6 with seven overs left.

However, the Prince brothers, Harry (45) and Sam (31), rode their luck and unleashed some lofty blows, scoring a quickfire 65 to push the score pass the 200-mark. Matt Stevens returned to bowl both men in the closing over.

Charlton Down’s response got off to the worst possible start with Jack Eveleigh being brilliantly caught at short mid-off for one in the first over and Roger Frapwell chasing a wide one, nicking to the keeper for nine with the score on 18-2 in only the sixth over.

Jae Miller and Matt Stevens looked comfortable against a good bowling attack but a change in bowling saw Harry Sorenson claim Miller who inside edged on to his stumps for 13 with score on 48-3.

Down near-mirrored Wimborne with the score on 82-3 off 22 overs, but the introduction of Dunk saw him snaffle 4-10 off just eight overs and Charlton Down collapsed to lose their last seven wickets for 47 runs.

Captain Tommy Tucker, said: “Catches win matches and no truer statement came from this game – we dropped ours and they caught everything. We are suffering from unavailability due to many factors but the positive factor it is giving some of the youth players an opportunity.”
