Dorchester skipper Martyn Richards is hopeful of a “promising season”.

The county town club have resumed training ahead of the 2010 Dorset League campaign, which starts on the first weekend in May, and first-team captain Richards has been impressed with the efforts thus far.

He said: “We’ve been having net sessions down at Budmouth School and they’ve been brilliant so far and very structured, thanks to the efforts of Paul Tweddle.

“There’s been plenty of enthusiasm from everyone and hopefully that’s a sign we’re in for a promising season.”

Richards’ men, who visit Blandford on the opening day, will take on Premier League rivals Poole Town in a pre-season friendly on April 24 with the skipper looking to arrange “one or two” more practice matches.

He added: “We’ll look to use the friendly with Poole as a final warm-up for the team. It’s going to be a competitive league again this year. Poole have been one of the top sides for the last 10 years so playing them in a friendly is as good preparation as we can get.

“We’ve got Blandford away in our first game and we’re all looking forward to that, hopefully we’ll enter it better prepared than the start of last season.”

Dorchester have bolstered their ranks for the upcoming summer in the form of all-rounder Andy Mead.

Richards said: “He’s a former team-mate of Charlie Sutton from their time in Bath and it looks as though he will be a great addition.

“He’s a competent seamer and a hard-hitting batsman and will bring a bit of strength in depth.

“There are some other new faces we may look to bring in as well to add some more experience to both the first team and the seconds.”
