RNSTS favourites to deny Saggies Echo Cup glory
HONOUR: Brendan King
HONOUR: Brendan King

RNSTS have made light of the tag of favourites ahead of tonight's Echo Cup final clash against the Saggies at Redlands (6.30pm).

Martin Hewson's side have beaten their opponents twice already this season in Weymouth Evening League Division One but nothing is being taken for granted.

Hewson said: "All the lads are very much looking forward to it. They are not a bad side so it is going to be a difficult game but we will be going into it full of confidence.

"We have beaten them twice in the league this season so I suppose people will say that we are the favourites but we are not even thinking about that.

"Before last year's final against the Bridge Inn Bears we were seen as the underdogs but we still won it so all we will be concentrating on is ensuring we play to the best of our ability because if we do that we know we will have a good chance."

Hewson has a full complement of players to choose from and will be naming a 14-man squad.

He added: "We have a good, strong, all-round side and if players like Dan Belt, Martyn Richards, Shannon Dunnett, Lee Haynes, Pete Moxom and Dave Trotter all perform well we will be difficult to beat."

Meanwhile, opponents Saggies, who will be contesting their second final since forming three years ago, are merely honoured to have reached this stage.

Skipper Brendan King, whose side beat New Look in the semi-final, said: "As sportsmen we want to win but deep down we know they've got too much quality for us. It's just an honour for us to reach the Echo Cup final.

"RNSTS have beaten us twice before and in all fairness we are expecting to get hammered. We have got Simon Browne who is a decent cricketer and good bowlers such as Alex Browne and Paul Gadsby but we're not stupid and don't think we have much of a chance.

"We will try and compete as best we can and go there to have fun."
