THIS week saw RNSTS retain the Echo Cup with victory over the Saggies and the showpiece occasion helped re-ignite some special memories for one local resident who captured the same trophy 70 years ago.
Jack Sansom, 86, helped Portland Red Triangle secure the very first league and cup double in 1938 and he can clearly recall beating Whiteheads at Portland Borstal in the Echo Cup final.
He said: "The pitch at the Borstal was looked after by the Borstal boys at that time and it was always in excellent condition.
"I was 16 and Whiteheads were a good side, and it was fantastic game. I can remember taking two wickets but in the end it came down to the last over.
"Fred Pritchard was bowling and he was very good but I knew what we needed to get and thankfully I managed to hit a four to give us victory."
Sansom went on to play a key role at Red Triangle for many seasons.
He added: "I captained the team for 19 years and I was secretary/ treasurer for 30 years. It was a great time and I have many fond memories of my time with the club."
